Application of nickel plating by galvanization on steel surface of brazed cemented carbide-maraging steel joints

Abstract Recently, the integration of a maraging steel heat treatment into vacuum brazing has been conducted successfully to manufacture high-strength and sound cemented carbide-steel joints with elevated mechanical properties component. Besides use low-melting silver-based active filler alloys cost-intensive palladium-containing alloys, application nickel layer on surface by an arc-PVD process is adequate approach overcome low wettability those steels, which caused high fractions elements oxygen affinity like titanium molybdenum. Though plating elaborate time-consuming coating process, it not suitable for industrial applications since required in specimen chamber only small number specimens can be processed at same time. Therefore, this publication evaluates galvanization chemical electroplating as alternative nickel-coating method brazed joint between carbide (1.2709) component using copper metal Cu 110 ( T M = 1085 °C). The electroplated PVD-coated reference featured from minimum thickness 7.0 µm similar microstructure consisting mainly copper-based fillet nickel-rich phase band steel-fillet interface. chemical-plated showed excessive diffusion joining partners due presence melting point depressant phosphor 10.5 12.0 wt.-% applied characteristic nickel-phosphorus layer. Consequently, migration occurred carbide-fillet interface, columnar iron-cobalt phases formed originating copper-rich fillet. Except coated no 2.5-µm PVD layer, all shear strength least 150.0 MPa. maximum 344.8 MPa was achieved 20.0-µm-thick Moreover, carried out homogenous hardness 648 HV1 measured after brazing.
